Around 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.

Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.

Police say they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.

The substance had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Police then found many other marked vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement state early analysis suggest the substance was most likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; officials are not yet cognizant of any harm in connection with the incident," they stated.

Local authorities announced they were trying "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the residents for information.

A senior political figure commented the attack rendered him without words and needed to be resolved quickly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, referring to the murder of nine people by a gunman targeting people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
