European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
